A short story about us
We’re two moms walking this homeschool journey right alongside you. Just like you, we wanted our kids to have a space where learning is hands-on, friendships come naturally, and curiosity is celebrated. Our kids are friends with your kids, and we know firsthand how important it is to have a supportive community to grow up in.
Our story began when we met through our children’s public school. As we each stepped into homeschooling, we teamed up with a couple of other families to form a small co-op around our kitchen tables and living rooms. Together, our kids explored science experiments, art projects, home skills, and plenty of interest-led adventures. Those early days showed us something powerful—kids thrive when they can learn and play in a space that’s both engaging and full of friends.
That little co-op has now grown into Brighten Learning Center, a place where families just like yours can come together for learning, creativity, and community. Our dream is simple: to give more kids the chance to explore, make, and discover in an environment that feels like home—because in so many ways, it is.

Mrs. Mullen
Hi, I’m Mrs. Mullen! Teaching is a huge part of who I am, but first and foremost, I’m a mom. I have two kids—Tyler and Emily—who started out in public school before I decided to bring them home in 5th and 3rd grade. Like so many parents, I wanted something more personal for them, a chance to learn in ways that fit their strengths and interests. That decision is what led me deeper into the homeschool world, and it’s been such a rewarding journey.
Before homeschooling, I taught at Melrose Elementary, working with students from pre-K through 6th grade. My heart has always been in STEAM—science, technology, engineering, art, and math—because I love seeing kids light up when they get to do and create instead of just memorize. I’m a certified teacher with a Biology degree and a Master’s in Education from the University of Florida. Along the way, I’ve also served in the military as a nurse—experiences that taught me resilience, compassion, and the value of meeting people where they are.
Now, through Brighten, I get to combine my love for teaching with my love for building community. I want every child who walks through our doors to feel excited to explore, try new things, and discover just how much they’re capable of.

Mrs. Thompson
Hello! I’m Sarah Thompson, and learning with my kids, Halle, Jack, and Adaline, is my favorite adventure. Homeschooling has shown me how powerful it can be when kids of all ages learn together, through shared experiences with one another. That passion inspired me to co-found Brighten, a place where curiosity and hands-on exploration are at the heart of everything we do.
I hold an Associate’s Degree in Elementary Education and a Bachelor’s Degree in Human Resources Management from Saint Leo University. I enjoy bringing both structure and creativity into the learning process, with the goal of helping children connect what they learn to real life in ways that feel meaningful and fun.
Maybe it’s the bragging rights or a shiny 3D-printed trophy, but I love watching our students tackle challenge-based projects and grow in confidence through problem solving without giving up.

Halle Thompson
Halle, a dynamic 13-year-old, finds joy in a variety of activities. She loves cooking, especially when it involves whipping up tasty treats for her family. At home, she occasionally enjoys challenging herself with 1000-piece puzzles. Recently, Halle took her building skills to a new level by constructing raised garden beds, showcasing her creativity and handiwork. In school, math stands out as her favorite subject and on the soccer field, she’s known for her dedication and team spirit. Halle thrives on a good challenge, whether it’s building for fun or working on a school project.

Tyler Mullen
Tyler is 13 and has a big passion for technology, baseball, and video games. He’s especially talented with coding and has become our go-to for anything involving our robots and the 3D printer—he loves designing and bringing ideas to life. When he’s not creating something new, you’ll probably find him out on the baseball field or playing video games. Tyler’s creativity and curiosity make him a big part of what keeps things exciting here at Brighten.

Emily Mullen
Emily is 11 and full of creativity. She loves theater and musicals, and can often be found singing along to her favorite shows or reading a good book. When she’s not on stage or with her nose in a story, Emily enjoys making bracelets and creating art projects of all kinds. She also plays softball and loves being a pitcher, bringing her energy and focus to the game. Emily’s mix of imagination, creativity, and determination shines through in everything she does, adding a fun spark to Brighten.

Jack Thompson
Jack, an energetic 8-year-old, thrives on outdoor activities and sports. Jack embodies all things lake life, whether he’s fishing in hopes of catching a big one, collecting and taking care of minnows, or wakeboarding. He also enjoys playing baseball and loves practicing and spending time with his buddies. In his neighborhood, Jack runs an unofficial landscaping business, helping neighbors with yard work and earning some pocket money. Math is his favorite subject, where he enjoys solving problems. Jack is always ready for the next adventure.

Adaline Thompson
Adaline, a vibrant 7-year-old, radiates joy through her love for dance, music, and performing. Whether she's twirling to her favorite tunes or putting on a show for her family, her passion for the arts shines brightly. Adaline also takes pride in nurturing her own little garden and enjoys writing stories filled with imagination. When she’s not dancing or gardening, she loves playing with her collection of Barbies and baby dolls, creating imaginative adventures. With her creativity and nurturing spirit, Adaline embodies the magic of childhood.
